Red Rocks of Sedona

After leaving Tucson, our next major destination was Sedona, Arizona. Sedona is a beautiful town surrounded by gorgeous red rock formations. At every turn we saw stunning desert views. It was still very hot, but a little more tolerable because of the breeze through the mountain valleys. Sedona is a sacred area to the Native Americans because of their belief in the healing powers of the red rock and the cool, clear waters. The Navajo jewelry being sold in shops and at roadside rests was so beautiful. It was very interesting to talk to the ladies about their inspiration when creating the jewelry. The red rocks and blue skies and green trees and the multihued wildflowers are such an essential part of their creative process. I found it peaceful to think of a people who are so connected to the harmony of the earth. One location that we saw, but did not have time to visit, was Slide Rock. It is a series of sloping red rocks and swimming holes that create a natural water park. It was very crowded and looked refreshing on such a hot day. Another enjoyable aspect of Sedona is the shopping and dining. The town is filled with quaint little shops selling everything from t-shirts and crafty items, to western wear and boots. We ate dinner at the Cowboy Club. It was decked out in all sorts of Old West paraphernalia and had a unique menu of cactus fries, buffalo steaks, and rattlesnake appetizers. Matt and I decided that Sedona would be a nice place to revisit and spend more time. Our RV park was called Rancho Sedona. It was a very nice, quiet, shady place with a friendly staff. There is a creek that runs through the property and creates a great place to cool off on such a hot summer day. Frequent visits from squirrels made for a close encounter with nature as well. I would certainly stay here again.
